What is Parkinson’s Disease? By Dr. Zankhana Buch | Signs & Symptoms | Apollo AyurVAID Hospitals

Parkinson’s disease is a progressive disorder that affects the nervous system and a part of the brain, eventually deteriorating and affecting the nerve-controlled parts of the body. It is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by a dopamine deficiency, thereby affecting motor functions and later also affecting non-motor, autonomic functions of the body. While this condition is best known for affecting muscle control, balance, and movement, it eventually starts affecting one’s senses, thinking ability, and mental health. It ranks second among age-related degenerative brain diseases. The risk of developing Parkinson’s disease naturally increases with age, and the average age at onset is 60 years old. It is slightly more common in men than in women.

The symptoms start with mild tremors in just one hand. Over time, these symptoms progress, leading to stiffness or slowing of movement. In the early stages of Parkinson’s, the face may show little to no expression. Arms may not swing while walking, and speech might become soft or slurred. Additional motor symptoms might include cramped or small handwriting, drooling, mask-like facial expressions, dysphagia, and hypophonia. Non-motor symptoms can include depression, sleep problems, issues in focusing, and anosmia. Although there are several recognized risk factors for Parkinson’s disease, the only confirmed cause is genetic.
