What is dementia? Well it’s a comprehensive loss of memory with reduced cognitive intellectual performance due to brain damage and cell death. Or in layman’s terms, it’s a group of symptoms that impact our memory, thinking, language, judgment, behavior, and even our personality. Unfortunately, there is no cure, but researchers have identified several risk factors that can increase your chance of getting dementia. Some are genetic, but others are modifiable lifestyle choices that you can change! Knowing your chances of having dementia can help you better prepare for what’s to come. We’ll go over a few now. Obviously, age is the largest risk factor, those over the age of 85 have an astounding 50% chance of developing dementia. Traumatic brain injuries will also put you at a higher risk for dementia, including concussions or other sports injuries. High blood pressure or cholesterol, along with diabetes are also risk factors. Smoking, as well as heavy drinking, have also been shown to increase your risk for dementia. People with African American or Latino ancestry are more at risk than those with Caucasian ancestry. Obesity, and particularly for women, can also play a large part in the development of dementia. There are many more risk factors for dementia than listed here or in the video, for more information, you can contact us directly at our website: http://answersaboutalz.org.
