Weight loss injectables popularity steadily increase [Video]

HAZARD, Ky. (WYMT) – In March of 2024, the Food and Drug Administration approved injectables containing semaglutide to be used for weight loss and not just diabetic treatment.

“So with that there’s been a really big demand because people are seeing drastic changes especially early on with weight loss,” said Hometown Pharmacy Pharmacist Tyler Wells.

For those who take the medication for diabetes Wells said it helps to lower A1C by producing more insulin.

“But also at the same time it slows down your stomach emptying and kind of gives you the feeling, the fullness association. So you’re not eating as often, and what you do eat is kind of filling up your stomach a little more because it’s being slowed down … Hence the weight loss.”

The Kentucky Legislative Research Commission released a fact sheet in 2021 which showed the commonwealth ranked eighth in obesity nationwide.
