HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) —  A teenage girl died in state custody at a residential commitment program in Hillsborough County, according to the Florida Department of Juvenile Justice. With very few answers, the 17-year-old’s family is turning to 8 On Your Side.

The family identified the teen as Zy’kiria Bell. Bell died at Lake Academy on May 29, and her family said they still don’t know how it happened. And no matter how she died, her family believes the state failed her.

“We don’t know what happened,” said Elita Bludsaw, Bell’s aunt. “We don’t know how it happened. We do know that she is not suicidal, she has a family full of love—that’s why she was in this facility and not on the street.”
