Uditi’s Enduring Spirit: Driving Advances in Neurodegenerative Disease Therapy
This story follows Uditi, a vibrant young girl from New Delhi, whose life was upended by a rare neurodegenerative disease called FENIB, caused by a mutation in the neuroserpin gene that is expressed in the neuron. Despite her passion for photography and her joyful spirit, Uditi’s health declined rapidly due to the disease, characterized by unique seizures and progressive brain damage. Her parents, Rajeev and Sonam, sought every possible intervention and eventually moved to New York, where they met Dr. Orrin Devinsky. He suggested a potential treatment using the revolutionary CRISPR gene editing technology, which offered a glimmer of hope despite significant risks and challenges.
