Vermont bus driver fills critical shortage for school districts [Video]

As districts across Vermont and New York work to overcome the challenges caused by a nationwide school bus driver shortage, one local bus driver is hoping her story will inspire more people to apply for the job. Heather Sumner comes from a long line of bus drivers; her grandmother, father and mother were all drivers for more than 30 years, and Sumner said some of her favorite childhood memories are the ones she spent riding alongside them. “Memories that I have now forever that are even more meaningful than I ever thought they would be,” she said. But after years spent working a traditional nine-to-five desk job, she said she never thought she would follow in their footsteps and get behind the wheel herself. “I never imagined I would do this job in a million years,” Sumner said.
