UK to Begin “Memory Clinics” to Trial Blood Tests for Dementia
Britain is set to begin more than 50 “memory clinics” that will trial blood tests for Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. These trials could lead to earlier and faster diagnosis. Around 5,000 volunteers will take part in the five-year research project, which will be carried out by teams at the University of Oxford and University College London. Reportedly, about a third of people in Britain never receive a formal diagnosis of dementia. Current tests, including positron emission tomography (PET) scans and spinal lumbar punctures, are so expensive that only around 2% of patients are able to receive them.
