May is NATIONAL BLOOD PRESSURE AWARENESS MONTH.
It’a a big deal considering that nearly half of the US adult population is hypertensive.
Most don’t even know it, and the majority are treated suboptimally.
Genetics play a role. If one of your parents is hypertensive, you have a 25% chance of having it yourself. If both parents are hypertensive, that number climbs to 50%
But genetics is but one piece of the pie. Before resorting to pharamaceuticals, I always emphasize lifestyle. Most important is weight loss and exercise, in that order.
Make no mistake about it; hypertension is the #1 risk factor for coronary artery disease and stroke. It also leads to heart failure, kidney failure , and dementia.
