TPS’ plans to move special education program to former elementary school building raises concerns | News [Video]

TULSA, Okla. — Tulsa Public Schools (TPS) is planning to move a recently launched special education program to a former elementary school building.

The Tulsa Transition Academy teaches graduated students with special needs independent living skills.

FOX23 covered the program when it first began this school year.

Currently, the program runs out of a classroom at Nathan Hale High School, but TPS announced plans to move the academy to the old John Ross Elementary School building.

“The vision for TPS with this program is one that is amazing, but the building they’re selecting is not in a good location,” said Alana Kennon, a parent at TPS.

Kennon said she has a daughter who’s planning on attending the academy next year. She said the building they want to move the students into is not in good condition and currently the Child Nutrition Office runs out of it.
