Tanmay Mukherji’s Professional Journey and Personal Reflections

I had the pleasure of reconnecting with my friend and college mate, Tanmay Mukherji, after 28 years. I remember him as a multi-talented, intelligent, and personable individual.

Tanmay shared updates about his family, including his wife Mita, also a college mate, and their two sons. Their elder son has a technical inclination, while younger son, initially interested in English literature, has shifted to commerce and plans to pursue an MBA.

Tanmay emphasized the importance of organizational structures and the professional grooming he received from his family business. He highlighted the value of starting from the ground up, a principle applied when his father’s partners’ children joined the business, reporting to him for mentorship.

We reminisced about college days, noting his active participation in various co-curricular activities such as singing, debating, and quizzing. He attributed his diverse interests to his family, who were all engaged in education and the arts.

After 25 years in the family business, Tanmay experienced a turning point during the COVID-19 pandemic, triggered by the loss of close friends. Realizing his work had become routine, he sought new challenges. He gradually withdrew from the family business, initially presenting it as a sabbatical.

Tanmay shared his experiences in sustainable innovation, including work on solar-heated houses in Ladakh and shelters for the Indian Army. He recounted his time staying with Sonam Wangchuk and his wife while building shelters for the Indian Army in Ladakh. He also discussed his efforts to provide job opportunities in remote areas of India.

He credited his college experience, particularly the diverse environment at REC, for his ability to handle people effectively. He learned to appreciate different cultural traits and adapt to various personalities, which has been crucial in his professional life.

Tanmay also touched on his personal interests, including a recent trip and his reflections on life and career. He mentioned a significant project where he built a solution for automotive customers, which inspired him to apply his skills to grassroots problems in India.
