Shapiro explains new program to buy and cancel medical debt [Video]

Yesterday Governor Josh Shapiro appeared alongside Representative Arvind Venkat and Primary Health Network CEO Dr. George Garrow as he announced plans to take on the medical debt crisis many Pennsylvanians are facing.

The governor earmarked $4 million dollars of the 2024-25 budget to buy and forgive $400 million dollars of medical debt in an effort to support Pennsylvanians as well as institute more transparent healthcare practices to prevent medical debt from being incurred in the first place.

Approximately 1 million Pennsylvanians carry some kind of medical debt, which disproportionately impacts rural counties.
