Unless you have been living under a rock throughout 2014-2024, you know that the world has changed a lot, especially in the ways we discover and consume music. Waiting outside the mall for the big, midnight album drop has been replaced by artists surprise-dropping entire discographies on Spotify. Seeing the Vevo release of a new music video has been taken over by “soft launches” of new music on Instagram Reels and TikTok. In previous decades, music that became the most popular depended on record and CD sales, magazine mentions, and sold-out shows. Today, the mall, record stores, and Vevo have taken a backseat while social media has taken the limelight when it comes to music discovery, advertising, and industry trendsetting.
