TV fans have been left baffled over a bizarre European TV series in which ‘Angela Merkel‘ solves crimes in her retirement.

Miss Merkel, a German series produced by RTL which debuted last year, follows a dramatised version of the former German chancellor living out retirement in Uckermark before she gets bored with being out if work; and decides to turn her attention to solving mysteries.

Katharina Thalbach plays the former chancellor, who governed Germany from 2005 until 2021, as her character decides on a change of career – much to the distaste of her concerned husband Joachim and bodyguard Mike.

After a trailer for the series, which has been dubbed in Italian and broadcast on Italian channel Rai, was posted on X (formerly Twitter), viewers expressed their bewilderment over the show and its premise – while also hoping for dramas based on other high-profile politicians.
