SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) – On Thursday (June 6), people across the nation remembered the sacrifice of 3,000 Americans who died on D-Day 80 years ago.

The Allied invasion eventually led to the liberation of France and helped defeat the Nazis in World War II. But not before more than 70,000 Allied forces were killed in the Battle of Normandy.

Springfieldian Jack Hamlin was supposed to be back in Normandy, France, on Thursday for special ceremonies marking the 80th anniversary. But the 102-year-old recently broke his collarbone and ribs in a fall. So, instead, Hamlin was honored at The Montclair assisted-living facility where he lives, receiving a proclamation designating “Jack Hamlin Day” and a key to the city from Springfield Mayor Ken McClure in front of over 100 well-wishers.
