La Vista police officer recovering after being stabbed [Video]

A La Vista police officer is at home recovering after being stabbed while responding to a mental health crisis involving a 16-year-old girl.

Shortly after 4 p.m. Wednesday, the girl’s mother called police after her daughter left home, Capt. D.J. Barcal said. The mother expressed concerns about her daughter’s mental health and suspected the girl had been drinking alcohol.

Officers found the girl entering the La Vista Community Center near 84th and Harrison Streets. Barcal said officers were familiar with the girl from previous incidents, including one where another police officer tore their Achilles’ tendon.

Four officers followed the girl into a restroom and the girl went into a stall.

As officers tried to bring the girl out, Barcal said, she resisted and started fighting. Barcal said the girl pulled out a knife and stabbed an officer, later identified as Officer Dana Miller, in the thigh. Officers were eventually able …
