KCPS considering three options for old school building [Video]

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Kansas City Public Schools is considering three different ways forward for Bryant School, built in 1915.

Students haven’t attended class there since 2009, but the building has been part of the many school buildings across the city offered up for redevelopment. FOX4 has toured the old Westport High School which became Residences at Park 39 and the old Marlborough School which is becoming a community hub.

“School buidlings tend to lend themselves well to housing,” KCPS Planning and Real Estate Manager Jesse Lange said. “Classrooms can easily be converted to one-bedroom, two-bedroom apartments.”

But, the added challenge at Bryant is a deed restriction limiting the potential future uses to something related to the school district or single-family housing. Most district uses or single-family housing plans would require demolishing the building, except if the building were to house district teachers.
