Hello Dementia Caregivers and welcome to another installment in our role-play series to help improve communication. As always, these videos are just guides and may not fully translate to your situation. Instead, they are meant to help highlight where breakdowns in communication may occur, and how to get back on the right track. Today, we go over how to check if your loved one is safe while living alone, and how to offer help without robbing them of their independence. These role plays are produced in collaboration with Sue LeDoux, author of “The Divine Meddler”.
Sue portrays the character of “The Mother” with dementia, while our host Debra portrays “The Daughter” or caregiver. In the first role-play video, Sue and Debra enact a scene in which the daughter tries to offer her mother help sorting through the mail. Once in an abrasive way, and the other in a more respectful way. Be sure to finish the video to see which has more success, but we have a feeling you know which it was.
In the second roleplay video, we demonstrate that sitting down with your loved one and asking what they would do in an emergency is a great way to assess if someone is safe to continue living alone. Be sure not to feed them the correct answer; this exercise relies on them proving what they believe the correct response is.
