Hoover police offering Special Needs Notification Program [Video]

HOOVER, Ala. (WBRC) – April is Autism Acceptance Month and the Hoover Police Department is offering a service to help those with special needs.

It’s a notification service that helps law enforcement prepare if they have to respond to your address.

Hoover police say their department is one of the first agencies in the state to offer this type of service to residents and right now, around 80 locations are utilizing the Special Needs Notification Program.

It can be used for any Hoover residents with invisible disorders like autism, Alzheimer’s, dementia, or any intellectual or developmental disability.

Lt. Daniel Lowe says the 911 Public Safety Communications Center can put a flag on your address. This way, if an emergency happens there, a notification will alert dispatch that there’s someone with special needs living there. He says the more detail you can provide about the disability, the better.
