Galantamine
It is a natural alkaloid which selectively inhibits cerebral AChE and has some
direct agonistic action on nicotinic receptors as
well.

Mechanism of action: Galantamine is a centrally acting reversible acetylcholinesterase inhibitor. Thus, ACh is not hydrolysed and it accumulates.

Actions: Galantamine has produced cognitive and behavioural benefits in AD. Cognitive
decline is slowed or halted for a short time,
but not prevented.

Dose: 4 mg BD.

Side effects: Diarrhoea, anorexia, nausea, muscle pain and
weird dreams, fatigue, hallucinations, insomnia.

Uses: Galantamine is used to treat mild to moderate dementia related to Alzheimer’s disease. It does not cure AD, but it may improve memory, awareness, and the ability to perform daily functions.
