CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) – While Independence Day is full of fun festivities and celebrations, the holiday can be mentally and emotionally grueling for some; therefore, one Lowcountry psychologist is sharing some tips for how those suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder can get through Thursday’s celebrations.
Dr. Stephanie Keller is the Division Chief of Outpatient Mental Health Services for the Ralph H. Johnson Department of Veteran Affairs Medical Center. She says that Fourth of July celebrations and fireworks can cause strong trauma responses and distress for many veterans. Both fireworks and large crowds can be mentally triggering for anyone suffering from PTSD.
