Early detection, annual screenings key in cancer treatment [Video]

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Dakota News Now) – When it comes to a cancer diagnosis, early detection is key. That’s why a preventative task force has recently lowered the recommended age for an important diagnostic screening.

For one regional health system, though, that’s been their standard operating procedure.

One woman’s journey with cancer shows how early detection can make a world of difference when it comes to cancer treatment.

“They come in, and they sit, and they tell you, ‘We’re sorry — this time, it’s not good news,’” said patient Tiffany Gaukel.

Gaukel got the news last May.

“You shut down. You don’t hear anything anymore. You go cold. You go blank,” Gaukel said.

She has breast cancer.

“I honestly couldn’t tell you how I felt. I was numb,” said Gaukel.

It was news she thought she was ready for.

“I’m going every six months. I’m prepared. If this is going to happen, it’s going to happen. I’m prepared for it, but you’re not,” said Gaukel.
