Preliminary data from Vermont’s Department of Health shows a slight drop in opioid-related deaths in 2023.While there are many different factors, health officials point to an increase in prevention efforts statewide helping to save lives.At the Johnson Health Center, a naloxone vending machine provides a discreet way to get Narcan to patients and it’s getting the life-saving medication to people in emergencies, one box at a time.”Our motto is to meet people where they’re at,” said Crystal Bolio, the complex care case manager at the center.Since the vending machine was installed last August, Bolio said close to 600 doses (300 boxes) have been dispensed. “We do see folks utilizing the machine in the middle of the night,” said Bolio. “So, we have a pretty good feeling that it’s being used in those emergency situations as well.”Jenna’s Promise works to remove barriers to treatment for substance use disorder.
