CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) – Charleston County Parks and Recreation Commission is working to make outdoor areas more accessible for disabled visitors.

The commission received a $24,590 grant from the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation for ten beach wheelchairs across the county parks.

The new wheelchairs are an addition to the older model of wheelchairs the county had. Wheelchairs are free and available on a first come first serve basis.

Officials feel it is important that everyone can enjoy the beach. Director of Recreation and ADA Coordinator of the Charleston County Park and Recreation Commission Steve Hutton says creating more accessible spaces impacts families greatly to let them enjoy moments that may have not been so easy to do before.
