Berkeley County Boy Scout troop retires American flag for community day of service [Video]

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. (DC News Now) — When Boy Scout Troop 1957 in Berkeley County was asked to do a community service project, its members rose to the occasion.

On Tuesday, they got to work at Countryside Assisted Living just outside of Martinsburg. The troop’s first task for the day was respectfully retiring a frayed American flag.

“It’s the nation’s flag, and scouts pay [attention] very closely to it because some flags, when they old, they begin to fade and it doesn’t look and represent the American flag,” explained scout Nathan Kendra.

“It’s part of our nation and I think we should respect that,” said fellow scout Lincoln Kendra.

The scouts then lunched with residents of the home, sharing perspectives on the history and significance of Old Glory.
