My presentation outlines the main objective of my PhD project – to describe the clinical profile of cerebral small vessel disease (cSVD), a group of pathologies affecting the small vessels of the brain. cSVD is the most common vascular brain disease and a major contributor to stroke and dementia. Its global health burden is increasing, yet, we are far from understanding the clinical signature of the condition. By using ‘big’ clinical and neuroimaging data, and harnessing the potential of state-of-the-art methods of statistical analysis, I hope to demystify cSVD. A better description of the clinical hallmarks of cSVD is crucial – it offers the potential to help design appropriate prevention and treatment strategies for a condition that constitutes a major clinical challenge.
