Alabama DHR looking for adult foster care families [Video]

DOTHAN, Ala. (WTVY) – Alabama DHR is reporting an 125% increase of elderly abuse cases since 2013.

While it sounds like a shocking statistic, SARCOA staff attorney Bobby Hamil said the statistics could be skewed.

“I can’t say I’m shocked because a lot of the cases go unreported,” said Hamil. “In fact, most of them probably go unreported because of a number of reasons.”

It’s important to note that elderly abuse is not just physical. It can be emotionally or financially.

Hamil said the most likely victims are those who have no support system.

“When someone is lonely or by themselves, whether it’s from a recent divorce or loved one passing away, they’re vulnerable targets,” said Hamil. “There are people out there that prey on that, unfortunately.”
